Last year, news broke that British-Nigerian actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor was set to star in, write and direct the film adaptation of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.

Shortly after that, the movie was picked up by Netflix for global distribution. After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival to mostly positive reviews, the Oscar-nominated actor’s directorial debut is finally available to stream on Netflix.

The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind (based on the semi-autographical book of the same name) tells the story of a thirteen-year-old boy in Malawi who invents an unconventional way to save his family and village from famine.

The movie is currently sitting pretty at 82% on review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes. Robert Abele from the LA Times said:

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind – feeds our hunger for inspiring tales in these desperate times with a beautifully engineered narrative latticework of hardship, hope, and know-how.”

And David Sims from The Atlantic had this to say about the movie:

“It builds realism and context into both sides of that story and manages to be a winning adaptation as a result.”

It’s not just critics, audience, especially African viewers, who have seen the movie are already enamored by it, and they’re letting us know on social media that we all need to take a break of watching reruns of Friends and give this gem a shot:
