‘Renowned oncologist Ajekigbe died of prostate cancer’

Renowned oncologist, Professor Aderemi Tajudeen Ajekigbe, died of prostate cancer, it has been revealed.

Tinu Lawal, one of his protégés and founder of Atinuke Cancer Foundation, in which Ajekigbe was a member of its board of trustees (BoT), stated this on Wednesday

Speaking with The Nation, Lawal, who is a cancer survivor, said the late professor discovered he was down with prostate cancer in June.

“This whole thing started for him just in June, not that he had it a long time ago,” she said.

“He retired from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in 2017. So, he was consulting somewhere around LUTH in one private hospital. I went to see him when I was travelling and he escorted me out with his two legs. Nothing was wrong with him.”

But following her arrival in June, she said Prof. Ajekigbe broke the news of his prostate cancer to her.

“He said, ‘Welcome back. I’ve joined your league.’ I said, ‘Which of your league, sir?’ He said while I was away, he had some complications while he was sleeping. He couldn’t carry his body. He had to call the ambulance to carry him. By the time they ran tests and everything on him, he had prostate cancer, Stage Four.”
