Over the past couple of months, Juls has doled out a series of brilliant singles, “Maayaa”, “Slow Down”, “Cake” and “Like Tu Danz” — all working up to the release of his all-encompassing new project, Colour, which was just released today.
The project opens with distinctly African percussion on the Worlasi-assisted “Nyafu Riddim”. It then takes a sharp turn with “Normal” — a track that finds Juls contrasting the afrobeat-influenced sound with a grime feature from British rapper, Kojey Radical.
This dynamic change sets the tone for the rest of the album, as Juls delves into a multitude of different genres, backed up by artists from all over the world — from Tanzania to Canada — and also aided by the skillful guitarist, Sonzi, as well as Kaasare on the saxophone.
Speaking about the project, Juls said:
“It’s 10 new tracks that are all perfect for the summertime, and a great blend of different sounds and traditional vibes.”
Due to the first two singles, “Maayaa” and “Slow Down”, we were expecting Juls to come out with hit after hit on this project, and he did not disappoint. Not only are his beats incredible, but the acts he enlists to add life to his production work all do a seriously good job.
Promising new act, Oxlade delivers a super strong opening verse and chorus on the tapes 4th track, “Angelina”, which also features Falz. The Canadian r&b singer, Sway Clarke does an incredible job on his solo track, “Sweetie Odo” — one of the standouts off the project.
A lot of the time, tapes by producers, no matter how solid they are, end up sinking flying under the radar rather rapidly. We are really hoping this doesn’t happen with Juls’ Colour, because there are a lot of good tunes for everyone, no matter your musical preference, to enjoy.
