Watch: First Look At Chiwetel Ejiofor In The Trailer For The ‘Maleficent’ Sequel

It has been raining Disney teasers lately — from our first look at the studio’s live-action Mulan remake, to more clips for the upcoming The Lion King. Now, they’ve come through with the second trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to 2014’s Sleeping Beauty spinoff. 

Angelina Jolie reprises to her role as the iconic wicked fairy godmother, who, as it turns out, is not one-of-a-kind after all. By the end of the new teaser, we learn that there are more horned and winged beings like her, giving us our first look at Chiwetel Ejiofor in his role as Connal.

It is unclear what Connal’s story is, but we can tell that it will be pretty significant, as the trailer indicates that he has authority over Maleficent. Whatever the arc for him turns out to be, we cannot wait to see it, because the British-Nigerian actor brings gravitas to every role. 

The official synopsis for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is setting up a great war between Maleficent and Queen Ingrith:

“The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and ultimately love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists.

Aurora’s impending marriage to Prince Phillip is cause for celebration in the kingdom of Ulstead and the neighbouring Moors, as the wedding serves to unite the two worlds.

When an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they can truly be family.”

Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville are reprising their roles from the first movie, while Ejiofor, Ed Skrein (Deadpool 2), Michelle Pfeiffer (Ant-Man and the Wasp) and Warwick Davis (Solo: A Star Wars Story) round out the new cast.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will be released on October 18, 2019!
