President Muhammadu Buhari and the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan yesterday met behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Daily Trust reports that the meeting was held at a time Nigerians are awaiting the transmission of the ministerial list to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
Buhari who was sworn in on May 29 for a second term is yet to appoint his key aides. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, media aides, among others have continued to occupy their offices without being reappointed.
A correspondent reports that even though the appointment of the key aides require no Senate screening and confirmation, the presidency is yet to explain the cause of the delay. The president’s closed door meeting with Lawan lasted for about 45 minutes. At the end of it, the Senate president left without speaking to the press on the reason for the meeting.
Lawan who arrived the forecourt of the State House around 3.25pm left by 4:10am. This is the first time that the duo would be having a one on one meeting since the National Assembly was inaugurated on June 11.
Recall that Lawan, Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege and some senators met with the president hours after they were elected as presiding officers of the Upper Chamber.
It took Buhari six months to compile his ministerial list in 2015 when he was sworn in for first term. The presidency had severally pledged to Nigerians that this time around the Federal Executive Council (FEC) would be constituted earlier than in 2015.
The Senate, a correspondent reports would resume on Tuesday from the two weeks recess it embarked upon.
