At midnight, a devastating fire erupted, consuming four shops at Nkwo Market, Umunze, located in Orumba South LGA of Anambra State.

The inferno, believed to have been ignited by a power surge, raged for hours until the state fire service personnel arrived on the scene, working tirelessly to bring it under control.

Thankfully, no lives were lost in the blaze. However, the affected shops, which predominantly sold provisions, plastic items, and attachments, suffered substantial damage to their merchandise and structures.

Confirming the incident, the State Fire Service Chief, Martin Agbili, emphasized the importance of electrical safety, urging residents to switch off appliances when not in use to prevent such tragedies.

Agbili stated, “At about 1:20 am on Wednesday, 21-02-2024, Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call regarding a fire outbreak at Nkwo Market, Umunze. Immediately, we deployed our fire truck and gallant firefighters to the scene. We fought, controlled, and extinguished the fire with the assistance of some traders and the public who responded at that time of the incident.”

”The cause of the fire was unknown but suspected to be a power surge. Fortunately, there were no casualties or loss of life, but approximately four shops were affected, primarily provision, plastic, and attachment shops.”
