Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has promised to provide N500 million in monthly assistance to poor residents of the state to mitigate the effects of the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy.
Obaseki made the promise on Wednesday when he spoke to members of the Nigeria Labour Congress during a peaceful protest in the state.
The governor said, “I have decided that every month, going forward, we will take N500 million from our own money to give to the poorest of the poor in Edo State. We are not waiting for anybody.”

He also called on the federal government to distribute the palliative President Bola Tinubu promised during the president’s broadcast to local governments around the country since they are more accessible to the public.
The president unveiled a N500bn palliative for manufacturers, small businesses, and farmers during his national broadcast on Monday.
In the broadcast, Tinubu also released plans to increase salaries and acquire 3,000 mass transit buses.
In other news, Kanyi Daily reported that Defence Chiefs from West Africa held a meeting at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
This comes after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in Niger Republic to hand over power to the democratically elected government of Mohamed Bazoum.
