Music executive, Don Jazzy has opened up about his decision not to sign singers Simi and Teni to his record label, Mavin Records.
During a recent interview, Don Jazzy expressed regret for not bringing Simi and Teni into the Mavin family, acknowledging their exceptional talents and expressing his admiration for their work.
The music mogul recalled how Simi participated in a Twitter competition for D’Prince and Wande Coal’s song “Journey of a Thousand Miles,” and submitted an impressive cover.
He revealed that despite being drawn to Simi’s talent, he couldn’t offer her a deal at that time because he wasn’t the one in charge of selecting the winners.
“I like Simi, I didn’t sign her. I wish I did. I like Teni, but I didn’t sign her. I wish I did”, Don Jazzy said
“I didn’t reject Simi. I did a Twitter contest for ‘Journey of A Thousand Miles’ ― D’Prince’s record featuring Wande Coal. I loved her cover. She was one of the people that participated. She didn’t win, but she was high up there.
“I didn’t pick the winners. I liked her but you can’t sign anybody. That’s one person I also regretted; I won’t say regret, but I wish we worked on stuff together”.
Similarly, Don Jazzy revealed that he had a connection with Teni and that they used to keep in touch. However, at that time, he hadn’t reached a stage where he could bring her from Atlanta to Nigeria for work.
The music mogul explained that due to the delay, other opportunities emerged for Teni, and he acknowledged that they had missed the chance to work together.
He said, “The same thing with Teni. We used to check up on each other. I had not grown to the point that I would move you from Atlanta to Nigeria for work. Now I can and we work before deciding if we are going to sign. Before I knew what was happening, there were faster people. She released records and I was like, ‘okay, we lost that one”
KanyiDaily recalls that Don Jazzy also revealed why he didn’t sign Wizkid and Davido when they were still emerging artists in the Nigerian music industry.
