President Bola Tinubu has asked the military to change its tactics and mindset against insurgents who are deploying “unconventional” techniques.

According to a statement by Dele Alake, special adviser on special duties, communications and strategy, Tinubu spoke on Friday at the graduation ceremony of senior course 45 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna.

The president said the enemies waging war against the country are not conventional armies, but “elusive irregular forces that disdain the normal rules of warfare”.

Tinubu said the military must be “brave enough” to reform its doctrine and practice in the fight against insurgency.

He asked African countries to collaborate to fight against common threats while acknowledging the multinational efforts of Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger Republic, and Chad to bring peace to the Lake Chad region.

”We must also be brave enough to reform military doctrine and practice. We do not face a conventional army in the traditional field of battle. No, we contend against mobile, elusive irregular forces that disdain the normal rules of warfare,” Tinubu said.

”We must adjust accordingly to subdue the menace. This shall require a change in mindset, strategy, and tactics in equipment and gear.”
