Music in the age of the internet is consumed quickly and forgotten just as fast, therefore, artists need to do more to keep their audience’s attention. This is where memorable, creative visuals come in, adding an edge that can make a song stick with fans long after its release.

2019 is almost halfway done, and Nigerian artists have come through with some great songs and even better music videos, enlisting the talents of gifted directors like Unlimited LA, Clarence Peters, Meji Alabi and Ademola Falomo.
Mavin Records’ latest signee, Rema broke out with the infectious single, “Dumebi”, which later got a very fitting, age-appropriate video; while his labelmate, Ladipoe managed to show off Lagos‘ oft-ignored beauty in the stunning video for “Jaiye”.
The stars of the alternative scene also got a chance to showcase what makes them special, unveiling weird, trippy videos that felt very on-brand — ranging from Prettyboy D-O and Santi’s brash clip for “Pull Up” to Wavy’s otherworldy visuals for “Body Deep”.
So, here are 10 of our favourite videos from the first half of the year:
