Kano state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has vowed to carry on demolition of what he called illegal properties in the state despite public outcry and backlashes.
He said he had no regrets over the exercise he described as the recovery of public properties that were illegally acquired and distributed to the people he called sacred cows by the former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje-led administration.
Recall that Yusuf of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) was sworn in as governor of Kano on May 29, 2023, to replace the outgone governor, Umar Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Protests, public outcry, including legal actions have continued to trail the demolition exercise, especially those who claimed they followed due process and acquired relevant documents before the procurement of their properties.
Although there is a subsisting court order to stay action on further demolitions, Yusuf insisted that more properties would be reclaimed.
He said this while receiving the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, alongside the traditional district heads and other members of the emirate council who paid him Sallah visit at the Government House.
“Your Highness, it is important for the emirate council to note that we embarked on the demolition exercise to bring back public properties that were illegally acquired and we will ensure that all such properties are restored back for the interest of the good people of Kano,” the governor said.
He took time to list the successes he has recorded within his 31 days in office.
However, Emir Bayero said his visit was to felicitate with Governor Yusuf on the 2023 Eid al-Adha celebration assuring him of his readiness to offer advice that would be of importance to the development of the state.
The monarch urged the government and well-to-do individuals in the state to assist the less privileged in limiting the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
