Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the brutal murder of a butcher, Usman Buda, by a horde of religious extremists in Sokoto State for alleged blasphemy.

In a statement, yesterday, in Abuja, President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described the killing as barbaric and kicked against any form of violence or jungle justice in the name of religion.

Okoh observed that the incident underscores the urgent need for increased efforts to foster religious tolerance, peace and unity in Nigeria’s diverse society.

He urged religious leaders in the country and their followers to promote inter-faith dialogue and peaceful coexistence for a harmonious society.

“CAN firmly believe in freedom of religion and peaceful expression of beliefs. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We will continue to advocate protection of citizens’ rights, regardless of their religious affiliation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Buda family during this difficult time,” he stated.

According to reports, Usman was stoned to death in Sokoto for condemning the death sentence slammed on another Muslim for blasphemy.
