President Bola Tinubu Signs Nigeria Data Protection Bill into Law

President Bola Tinubu has officially signed the Nigeria Data Protection Bill, 2023, into law, solidifying the legal framework for safeguarding personal information and promoting data protection practices in Nigeria.

During the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) validation workshop held in Abuja, Vincent Olatunji, the national commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), made this announcement. Former President Muhammadu Buhari had sent the bill to the Senate and House of Representatives for consideration and passage through a letter on Tuesday, April 4.

Now enacted as an Act, the new law establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, supplanting the NDPB that was set up by former President Buhari in February 2022. The Commission will be led by a National Commissioner who will assume the responsibility of regulating the processing of personal information, ensuring compliance with the provisions outlined in the Act.

The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 marks a significant milestone in fortifying personal information protection and advancing data protection practices across the nation.

Recall that the President earlier signed the student loan bill into law.
