There are growing indications that England international Harry Kane could finally be pressing his exit button from Tottenham with Old Trafford emerging as the only option as his next destination.
Kane and Tottenham have endured a disappointing campaign after the north London club ended their campaign in a disappointing manner as they will sadly be missing out in European football next season for the first time since 2009/2010.
And following the development at White Hart Lane, expectedly, the 29-year-old could be heading for a showdown with the club over his future, with suggestions emerging that the striker is reportedly willing to remain in the Premier League this summer.
Kane netted an astonishing 30 league goals in a superb individual campaign despite the north London club’s struggles – with Spurs only finishing eighth and missing out on Europe.
The England captain only has one year left on his contract with Tottenham and Kane has emerged as e top target for United’s boss Erik ten Hag in his bid to bolster his misfiring frontline at Old Trafford.
And while there had been speculations that Spurs might be more willing to do business with foreign clubs rather than sell to a rival, prompting links with a move to Bayern Munich.
Again, Real Madrid have also emerged as a potential destination in recent days as Karim Benzema weighs up a mammoth salary offer from Saudi Arabia, with Carlo Ancelotti seeing Kane as the ideal replacement.
But National Daily learnt from the claim by The Sun that Kane has little desire to leave England – particularly while he is chasing Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record – and sees Manchester United as his only viable destination.
Kane is just 48 goals away from breaking Shearer’s record of 260 goals, a feat he could realistically hope to achieve in the next two seasons.
But he also wants to be competing for silverware – something that looks a long way off at managerless, rudderless Spurs – whereas United finished third in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup, while they are also in the final of the FA Cup.
Kane would not risk destroying his reputation and legacy with Spurs fans by moving to rivals Chelsea or Arsenal, while Manchester City now have Erling Haaland leading the line and Liverpool aren’t looking for a striker.
Newcastle is not an attractive enough proposition at this stage despite finishing fourth, while they cannot stump up in excess of £100m to land Kane.
That leaves United as Kane’s only real option and he would be keen to make the switch to Old Trafford this summer, though he is prepared to run down his deal and leave as a free agent next year if Levy refuses to sell.
As things stand, the latter option looks most likely, though Tottenham would hope the appointment of the right manager – and a return to form – might give Kane cause to rethink walking out in the summer of 2024.
