The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Tuesday, condemned the killing of the final year student of the institution, simply known as Desmond.
Desmond, popularly known as ‘Mayor’ was on Monday shot dead in his room at the Hall 3 Hostel by unknown gunmen in what appeared like a cult-related incident.
The late student, who was said to be in the Department of Public Administration was shot at about 9 pm on Monday.
Reports say the deceased was also the kegite chief of the institution.
The spokesperson of UNIBEN, Benedicta Ehanire, in a statement, disclosed that the management was working closely with the police and internal security to apprehend the killer.
The statement read, “The management of the University of Benin has condemned the brutal and sad killing of a final year male student, known mostly as ‘Mayor’ (real name withheld) on the night of Monday 3rd March 2023.
“The gruesome shooting occurred in one of the halls of residence and was carried out by yet-to-be-identified gunman.”
While commiserating with the family and colleagues of the late student, the management enjoined other students to be calm.
“Management is also working closely with the internal security units in ensuring that such dastardly incident does not occur again within the university’s premises,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Kanyi Daily reported that
some former students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have recounted their unpleasant experiences at the institution’s Hall 3 hostel.
The ex-students recounted their experiences while reacting to the news of the murder of a final-year student of the university, simply known as Desmond.
