The reason why Manchester United FC fans would rather see Manchester City win the Premier League title than Liverpool FC

It’s not a great choice for Reds fans but Pep Guardiola’s side will always be the choice of out their two bitter rivals

Gary Neville once compared who he would rather win the Premier League out of Manchester City and Liverpool to ‘having a choice of two blokes to nick your wife.’

In a dream world, United fans would never have either of their bitter rivals come close to lifting the Premier League title but unfortunately, just as it did in 2014, the nightmare situation is here again.

But for most United fans it’s not even close. If it came down to picking between the two, it’s City every time.

For a brief history lesson the rivalry with Liverpool is more than just about football, going as far back as the building of the Manchester Ship Canal at the end of the 19th century.

To avoid turning this piece into a detailed history lesson, the rivalry begun when Liverpool used to charge Manchester heavy duties on all their exports, mainly cotton, coming out of the city; the Mancunian merchants were so angry about this so built the ship canal to totally bypass Liverpool and avoid having to pay their hefty fees.

Personal battles, vile chanting and heated games have fuelled the rivalry over the years – Luis Suarez racially abusing Patrice Evra in 2011 is a prime example.

Manchester as a city has its place in football history as a city not just as separate clubs in fact it was City who helped United against a third club, Central, that threatened their existence nearly 90 years ago.

Then there was the Munich tragedy in 1958, the whole city mourned the tragedy and City’s goalkeeper Frank Swift was killed in the disaster rivals brought together.
