Last year, Uzo Aduba was cast in a Netflix coming-of-age movie, Beats, alongside Anthony Anderson (Black-ish). Now, the official trailer for the hip-hop drama has dropped, and it shows Aduba absolutely nailing the role of the lead character’s fiercely protective mother.
Described as “a coming-of-age drama set in Chicago’s South Side hip-hop scene”, Beats follows a musical prodigy (played by Khalil Everage) with borderline agoraphobia, whose path collides with a former music manager (Anderson) who has fallen from grace.
In the trailer, we learn a little more about the teenage prodigy. It shows that he has been the victim of violence, including an incident that ended with his sister being shot and killed. It also alludes to the fallout of that experience being his borderline agoraphobia.
According to reports, the drama will also feature established and rising Chicago-based hip-hop producers and artists, including original music from Young Chop — the gifted producer who’s worked with Ty Dolla $ign, Big Sean, Kanye West, Gucci Mane and many more.
Beats is set to hit Netflix on June 19.
