About a month ago, Santi announced that he will be releasing his debut album, Mandy & The Jungle, in the weeks to come. Following a gripping trailer that teased songs off the tape, we have been impatiently awaiting the arrival of his latest creation.
Now, it seems we are one step closer to discovering the immersive universe that Santi has spent the last couple of years building, as the ultra-creative mind finally dishes out the tracklist and album cover for this imminent project.
With Santi’s carefully contemplated films, which he dubs music videos, it is clear that the multifaceted artist has a knack for storytelling. Speaking with The Native, Santi explains that Mandy & The Jungle is another manifestation of his inclination towards storytelling:
“Mandy is a story in itself, and the songs on the album are a soundtrack to the universe.”
According to Santi, Mandy is extremely troubled, her turbulent state of mind reflected in the manic teaser video, as well as the tumultuous album art, which was designed by Ahmad Tarek. Introducing his new character, Santi shares:
“There’s a girl called Mandy. She’s very quiet. Each day she waits to die, because she doesn’t have anything to live for.
She thinks she’s going crazy because she keeps hearing her name. She doesn’t know she has this power over a whole legion of people.”
Mandy & The Jungle will be an immersion into Mandy’s feverish universe, with 16 tracks that welcome a wide range of guest artists to guide us through — from Grammy-nominated American acts, DRAM and GoldLink, to past collaborators, Tay Iwar and Amaarae.
When it comes to the production of the tracks on Mandy, Santi keeps it pretty close to home on that front, enlisting some of the most impressive and versatile beatsmiths in the game today — Genio, GMK, Odunsi, Le Mav, Higo — to handle the bulk of the project.
Although Santi has a clear artistic identity, he always manages to exceed our already high expectations. The tracklist for this hotly anticipated project is no different, as the hardworking artist has drawn in names that we wouldn’t ever have imagined him collaborating with.
Here are a few tweets that illustrate just how hysterical Nigerians are at the imminent arrival of Mandy:
