It has been over a year since D’Prince last released any music, and even before his appearance on “Gucci Gang”, he was a rare sight in contemporary afropop. Lately, however, D’Prince has been making the rounds, owing to his discovery of rising star, Rema.
After such a major discovery, it seems D’Prince is finally ready to focus on his own music career, making a comeback with a short, sweet and all-encompassing EP, Lavida.
Although Lavida is only a three-track body of work, D’Prince manages to display some versatility, doling out three contrasting sounds on each song. First up is the title track, “Lavida”, which features D’Prince’s own discovery, Rema.
With Arabian intonations that we now know to be Rema’s signature, the beat for “Lavida” is perfectly suited to D’Prince’s featured act. Charged with the song’s chorus and also awarded a verse, Rema steals the show on “Lavida”, after a commendable opening verse from D’Prince.
The following track is the Don Jazzy-assisted “My Place”. Produced by Baby Fresh, “My Place” is a distinctly celebratory track with live band accents, making for a super catchy number that rings typical of the two afropop old-hands.
D’Prince ends the project solo, looking to Baby Fresh once again for the production of his r&b closer. Describing a love-at-first-sight encounter, “True Love” proves that the only constant on the tape is D’Prince’s love of women — the subject matter he adopts for all three tracks.
