Earlier this week, Sess dropped his impressive remix of Starboy’s 2018 banger, “Soco”. Adorning the monumental song with EDM/dance tenets, Sess’ remix reminded us of his unbridled talent, prompting us to look back at his unjustly under-appreciated debut album, Omo Muda.
While “Original Gangster”, the lead single off the LP, earned some well-deserved attention, most of the other songs on the album went largely unnoticed, including the phenomenal Simi-assisted opening track, “One Billie”, also featuring Joh Makini.
Every good producer is a keen student of music. Their ability to identify different sounds and periods, and blend them together, makes for dynamic tracks that touch on nostalgic heartstrings whilst also retaining contemporary musings.
Sess’ exceptionally produced “One Billie” is a prime example of such a track: His production harkens back to early 2000s’ pop music, from Nigeria and the world, before the introduction of Simi’s voice brings us back to the present.
On “One Billie” Simi sings of a sexy man who is driving her mad. Despite being advised to stay away from men, Simi has handed her heart over to one, because he makes her feel like a billion dollars. The fellow in question happens to be Tanzanian rapper, Joh Makini, who responds in his local dialect.
