In the Marte area of Borno State, militants from the Islamic State-backed Boko Haram group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jam’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihd, ambushed about 20 soldiers and took several more hostage.
The incident took place in Marte town on Friday, according to a military source who spoke to SaharaReporters.
Before the attackers struck, he said, the soldiers were on their way to Maiduguri, the state capital.
He further added, “On Friday, there was another ambush.” The most difficult battle is ambush. We lost 20 men in the battle. Marte was the victim of the ambush.”
During the attack, the militants burned two weapons trucks and took two others, according to the source.
“Two gun trunks were burned, while Boko Haram militants took two additional weapons trucks,” he claimed.
In northeastern Nigeria, Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province, have killed thousands and uprooted millions.
The Nigerian military has consistently stated that the insurgency has been mostly vanquished, and any losses are frequently minimized.
Soldiers have been attacked by rebels in recent months.
Since January 2021, hundreds of soldiers and officers have reportedly been killed.
During the year, two explosive-laden cars plowed into a military convoy in Wulgo, killing some soldiers.
Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Bana Jundullah were identified as the suicide bombers. Four military vehicles, according to the organization, were also destroyed.
The rebels also killed roughly 20 soldiers in Malari, Borno State, in February.
The soldiers were on patrol following credible intelligence to remove some Boko Haram elements in the region when they were assaulted by the organization, according to SaharaReporters.
