Nigeria’s separatist campaigners today fulfilled their vow to protest at the United Nations in New York, to draw international support for their cause.

Called for the one-million-man freedom march, the protest which will last till 21 September, is being coordinated by the Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination (NINAS).

The protesters from Yoruba self determination groups, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other agitators from the Middle Belt-are demanding the United Nations to supervise referendums in the Middle Belt and southern parts of Nigeria.

They also demanded an end to the genocide being perpetrated by herdsmen in the name of grazing and rejected 1999 constitution.

The protest coincides with the 76th UN General Assembly, which started today.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination (NINAS), Prof. Banji Akintoye, said the protest was to draw the attention of world leaders to state-sponsored terrorism against the people of the Middle Belt and southern Nigeria.

The Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination (NINAS) in a post on Facebook said the protest will last 10 days.

It urged sympathisers to join the march.

“Please if you are in the USA or Canada, be a part of this historic March.The journey to redemption has started”, it said.
