Reps Seeks To Overturn The President’s And Governors’ Immunity Clauses.

The President, Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors of Nigeria may lose their immunity from prosecution.

The House of Representatives is debating whether or not they should lose their immunity clause.

A bill that would allow them to face criminal and civil charges will be read for the second time in the Green Chamber soon.

The constitution amendment bill was sponsored by Hon. Rimamnde Kwewum, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Taraba State.

Persons identified and/or alluded to in Sub-Section 3 of Section 308 of the 1999 CFRN (Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) are protected from lawsuits under current law.

Subsections 1(a), (b), and (c) apply to people who occupy the offices of president or vice president, governor or deputy governor; (2) and (3).

“In effect, judicial procedures for persons holding these offices are restricted by this constitutional provision under Subsections 1 and 2, Section 308, CRFN,” Kwewum stated.

The goal of the lawmaker’s bill is to change Sections 308(1)(a), (b), and (c), as well as Section 308(2), to ensure that government leaders, no matter how powerful, are held accountable for their acts.
