According to PUNCH, the inmates numbering between 38 and 40 escaped from the police cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department, inside the State Police Headquarters on Sunday night.

It was gathered that the inmates, who were detained for various offences, were kept in the police custody due to the congestion of the Nigeria Correctional Services in Enugu.

According to the report, some of the escapees were remanded by magistrate courts at the police cells during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

When contacted on the telephone, the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdurrahman, did not pick his calls at the time of filing this report.

KanyiDaily had earlier reported that a notorious armed robber and rapist, Adeniyi Ajayi also reportedly escaped from the custody of the Lagos State Police Command.
