Enugu Rangers have recanted in their earlier decision to appoint a substantive coach on Tuesday following Sunday’s indefinite suspension of the club’s technical crew led by Benedict Ugwu, Completesports.com reports.
The Flying Antelopes have now decided to delay the appointment by 24 hours, saying it would look suspicious and a predetermined action to fire their coach on Sunday and hire a new one on Tuesday.
Completesports.com reports that following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at home by Akwa Starlets, an embittered Vitus Okechi – the Enugu State Commissioner for Sports, announced an indefinite suspension of the team’s coaching crew led by Benedict Ugwu.
The state’s sports helmsman disclosed that a new coach would be appointed and unveiled in 48 hours (on Tuesday).
The Flying Antelopes hierarchy immediately met at Rangers camp that Sunday night and installed the duo of coach John Edeh and Captain Okey Odita in temporary charge of technical matters pending the arrival of a new substantive coach.
The search for a new coach commenced immediately as officials of the club contacted the trio of coaches Sylvanus Okpala, Ladan Bosso and Mbwas Mangut for the vacant job.
But after a marathon meeting Tuesday, Rangers officials decided to tarry a while in the appointment of a new coach. They, thus, shifted the planned appointment and unveiling to Wednesday.
“The club held an exhaustive meeting today [Tuesday] and resolved to properly evaluate the situation so that a decision that would be in the best footballing interest of the club would be taken,” Norbert Okolie, spokesman of the club told Completeports.com.
“We have therefore shifted the official appointment of a new coach to Wednesday. This is to ensure we harnessed every issue that could arise between now and tomorrow.
“We don’t want to be in a hurry. Suspending our coaches on Sunday and appointing new ones on Tuesday May look like a predetermined action, hence the need for us to tarry a while.”
Rangers are scheduled to host Pyramids of Egypt on Sunday in their first Group A match of the 2019/2020 CAF confederation Cup competition.
