LFormer Arsenal star Paul Merson has expressed shock over Chelsea’s new two-year contract for Cole Palmer.

Chelsea announced on Tuesday that Palmer had put pen to paper on a two-year extension as a reward for an outstanding 2023/24 campaign.

Palmer scored 25 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances following his £42.5million move from Manchester City last summer.

But Merson objected to the new deal saying Chelsea doing know what they are doing.

“They don’t know what they’re doing! I’m not being horrible but you’re talking about nine years’ time! How can you tell how he’s going to be in nine years’ time?”

“He’s had an unbelievable season and he is a good player, but this season every team they face, the first thing in the team talk will be ‘stop Cole Palmer playing’ – that’s the thing now, he’s got that the whole time now. And now you’re giving him a nine-year contract? Don’t get me wrong, I like him. But they’re giving these players seven, eight, nine-year contracts…”
