Two of England’s heavyweights Manchester United and Liverpool will go head-to-head at Old Trafford today in what promises to be a tantalising contest.
The pressure continues to pile on the shoulders of United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is said to retain the faith of the Red Devils board for the time being.
And for Solskjaer to convince the board that he is the man for the job, he must earn United’s first win against their bitter rivals in the Premier League in three years.
The last time United tasted victory over Liverpool was 10th of May 2018 when they ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford was the hero for the Red Devils thanks to his brace while Liverpool’s goal came after Eric Bailly tucked the ball into his own net.
Since then, United have gone six straight games without a win, suffering three defeats and securing three draws.

With only one point from the last nine on offer in the Premier League, sixth-placed United are five points behind leaders Chelsea and could very well drop further down the rankings depending on what transpires before the Reds visit to the Theatre of Dreams.
Not since October 2019 have United gone four games without a win in the top flight, but the Red Devils only have two victories to boast from their last seven top-flight encounters at Old Trafford, where Liverpool will aim to condemn them to a 10th home clash without a clean sheet in the Premier League.
And for Jurgen Klopp’s side, they are still unbeaten in all competitions since the season commenced, and are second with one point behind leaders Chelsea.
And concerning injuries, Marcus Rashford and Fred have both emerged as doubts for this game after coming off injured against Atalanta, while a recent report claimed that Bruno Fernandes was limping in training after the Champions League encounter and is also uncertain.
Solskjaer is optimistic over Rashford’s fitness, though, while Anthony Martial and Amad Diallo could also return to beef up the hosts’ attacking options, but Raphael Varane is out of contention.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are hopeful of welcoming Curtis Jones back in time to face the Red Devils, but Thiago Alcantara is expected to remain out of contention alongside Harvey Elliott for the time being.
Fabinho was surprisingly named on the bench in midweek but is sure to replace either James Milner or Naby Keita in the starting eleven, while Jones could also rival one of the duo for the other spot in the engine room alongside Jordan Henderson.
Diogo Jota’s injury scare over the international break has seen him cede his place in the side to Firmino, whose last 10 Premier League goals have all come on the road.
