Hart Close To Joining Tottenham Hotspur On Free Transfer

Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart is close to signing for Tottenham on a free transfer.

Hart, 33, was on the market after departing Burnley at the end of last season, and he emerged as a shock target for Spurs manager Jose Mourinho on Sunday evening.

The former Chelsea boss wants Hart to bolster the club’s homegrown quota of British players.

Premier League clubs are only allowed 17 overseas players in their 25-man squads, and Tottenham currently have too many who do not count as ‘home-grown’.

And according to talkSPORT sources, Hart, who won two Premier League titles at City, has penned a two-year deal with Spurs.

He underwent a medical on Monday morning, and Hart will become back-up to club captain Hugo Lloris and Argentine Paulo Gazzaniga, after Dutchman Michel Vorm left the club this summer.

Hart looks in impressive shape as he shared some workout pictures recently, with the goalkeeper surely hoping to play a bigger role after his disappointing spell at Turf Moor.

He spent two years at the Lancashire club, and made 19 league appearances in his first season as he shared goalkeeping duties with Tom Heaton.

In 2019/20, however, he made just three appearances as Nick Pope took over as the Clarets’ No.1.

But former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has questioned if Hart will get the game time he wants in north London, insisting the former England man ‘still has a lot to offer’.

“It’s a funny one for Joe Hart,” said the talkSPORT pundit.

“I do feel for him because we all remember images of Joe Hart when Man City won the Premier League title and his career just seems to have gone the completely wrong way.

“He got Pepped at Man City, he went to Burnley and ended up being behind Nick Pope and hasn’t played many games

“You’d think he’d want to go somewhere and just play… he’s not going to get enough game time at Spurs, I don’t think, because Hugo Lloris seems to play all the time.

“He’s 33 and I’d like to see him go somewhere and play week-in week-out, because I think he’s a good goalkeeper and he’s still got allot to offer.”
