In honor of the 165th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Eastern region of Nigeria on July 27, 1857, President Muhammadu Buhari has joined Anglican Communion members in Igbo land and all over the world in celebration.

In the 1857 Niger voyage, the Church Missionary Society (CMS) crew, which also included the Rev. John Christopher Taylor, Catechist Simon Jonas, Augustus Armadillo, and others, was led by the Rev. Samuel Ajayi Crowther, who later rose to become the first African Anglican bishop of West Africa.

In acknowledgment of what the true Christian faith teaches and advises to all adherents, Buhari asked the Christian faithful commemorating CMS day to keep the principles of love, compassion, sacrifice, forgiveness, and selflessness in a diverse nation like Nigeria.

He said that this celebration of faith, hope and victory is an opportunity for reverent worship to God and prayers for the unity, stability and prosperity of the country, at a time like this.
