Since leaving Nigeria for the US, courtesy of a well-deserved scholarship, Divine Oduduru has been thriving. Now, to cap off a monumental season, the Nigerian has been named the ‘Men’s Track Athlete of the Year‘ by the US Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Representing Texas Tech University, Oduduru has raced his way into the hearts of fans and the pages of record books. The 22-year-old became 2019’s fastest man when he ran the fastest one-day double in both the 100 metres and 200 metres.
As if that was not enough, he booked a place in the upcoming 2020 Olympics and also made history as the second fastest African athlete ever. With these feats, we aren’t surprised that he’s being honoured with the highest award for a student-athlete in the US.
In fact, according to the USTFCCCA website, he’s now the first-ever athlete from the Big 12 Conference to be named ‘Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year’ in the history of the award. Now, how’s that for a start to his professional career?
