It’s been just a month since Mikel Obi joined Middlesbrough, and he already has a sort of cult following in the club. Fans are so impressed by the 31-year-old’s performance so far that they have composed a song for him, calling him the “African Zidane”.

Yesterday, Middlesbrough beat Blackburn 1-0 in their own home, moving up to fifth on the Championship table. Not only did Obi play all 90 minutes of the game, but he also ran the show throughout the match – pulling off two dribbles, one tackle and one shot.

In fact, trusted football ratings website, WhoScored rated Obi’s pass success rate during the game at an impressive 90%. So, you can see why Middeslbrough fans have all gone bananas, and are quite literally singing his praises.

In one of the videos making the rounds on social media, a large number of Middlesbrough fans are out in a car park, singing and dancing to the Mikel Obi song. In another one, a mother secretly records her five-year-old daughter singing the song gleefully while jumping on a bed.

It’s not clear when this song was composed or who even put it together, but we’re sure here for a celebration of one of the very best and most consistent Nigerian footballers working today. Now, excuse us while we try to learn every bit of the song.
