Over the weekend, Burna Boy released his first official single of the year, the contemplative “Dangote”, upon which he described the average Nigerians’ struggle to make it, despite the fact that the rich are still getting richer.

Now, he’s dropped a stunning video that reiterates the song’s message, also encouraging our government to consider employment a priority.

The video for “Dangote” begins with Burna Boy’s outline of the economic issue he wishes to tackle over the course of the track:

“The richest man in Africa still goes to work every morning. Employment and job creation should be a priority for any government.

The National Bureau Of Statistics puts the estimated number of unemployed Nigerians at 23.1%.”

On the track, Burna Boy recurrently utters the name of the richest man in Africa; then in the video, the wealth that we associate with Dangote’s name cleverly juxtaposes the video’s depiction of the hustle the masses must face each day.

Directed by Clarence Peters in top form, the accompanying video for “Dangote” illustrates the socio-economic problems Nigerians are currently facing — from women being sexually harassed on buses to boys running internet scams.

On “Dangote”, Burna Boy sings from the perspective of the average Nigerian who hustles everyday to make their way in life. In the video, however, Burna Boy hands it over to Lagos‘ citizens, capturing their day-to-day lives and depicting their struggles.
