There was tension in Isiama Afaraukwu community in Umuahia North local government area of Abia State when over 100 fierce-looking soldiers invaded the the country home of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu on Sunday afternoon.
This is coming barely two weeks to the burial of parents of Nnamdi Kanu; HRH Eze Israel Okwu Kanu and Ugoeze Sally Kanu, scheduled to hold on the 14th of February.
According to residents, nine military vans were spotted with soldiers blocking all the roads leading to the home of the IPOB Leader.
Shops that were opened for minor businesses on Sunday were forced to shutdown, as every nearby streets and major roads became deserted as fear gripped residents.
“The soldiers numbering over 100 in nine military veterans and 2 Armored personnel carriers have been patrolling Bank road to Flo FM.
“The Soldiers have blocked the entrance street to Eze Kanu’s Palace, Afaraukwa, Umuahia with their van, walking round the community on foot. Everyone was scared, we ran away,” a resident said.
Another resident who simply gave his name as Abarikwu said he was on his way back from church when he got a call that soldiers had invaded the community.
The younger brother to the IPOB leader, Prince Emmanuel Kanu in a telephone interview confirmed the presence of the soldiers in the community and roads leading to the palace.
Younger Kanu also told reporters that residents, road users and visitors who tried to make use of the road leading to the palace on sighting the heavy military presence turned back.
The 14Brigade Public Relations Officer, Capt Iliya Daudu couldn’t be reached, but a military source in Umuahia dismissed report of the invasion.
Meanwhile, KanyiDaily had reported that Afaraukwu kinsmen of Nnamdi Kanu are divided over his return from the United Kingdom (UK) to pay his last respects to his parents.
While some chiefs said they would have loved Nnamdi Kanu to return as is customary so that he could take part in the burial rites for his parents.
Others warned that his return may trigger another crisis that could lead to another invasion of the community by security agencies.
