Arsenal had an eight-man shortlist to replace the legendary Arsene Wenger, before deciding to appoint Unai Emery as their next manager, The Athletic reports.
Emery has come under-fire in recent weeks, as the Gunners struggle to make progress in his second season in charge
The Spaniard was one of eight coaches considered and was selected after a thorough process.
Emery was reportedly joined on the final shortlist by former players Mikel Arteta, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira, as well as Massimiliano Allegri, Jorge Sampaoli, Ralf Rangnick and Julen Lopetegui.
They also claim two former Chelsea bosses, Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri, were discussed, as well as British managers Eddie Howe and Brendan Rodgers, but ultimately not pursued.
