The Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Awka, the Anambra State capital, has upheld the elections of Senators Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Peoples Party and Uche Ekwunife of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Anambra South Senatorial District and Anambra Central Senatorial District respectively.
While the oil mogul defeated Chris Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party and Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress at the tribunal, Senator Ekwunife defeated Victor Umeh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Umeh had challenged the declaration of Ekwunife by the Independent National Electoral Commission, stating that she was not properly nominated by her party, while the Uba brothers alleged that the election of Ifeanyi Ubah was characterized by violence.
Ifeanyi Ubah in his reaction said ‘
When I embarked on this Senatorial quest months ago, it was to translate to reality the dreams of a better future for my long suffering and downtrodden people. My “Open door” message resonated seamlessly with the electorate because they could tell my vision was distilled to the service to humanity, and not hinged on an intent to occupy office for the perks and privileges.
I dedicate this victory to God first, my lovely wife; Mrs Uchenna Ubah wife and children, my great party; YPP, various stakeholders and sponsors who always believed in my cause as well as my resilient supporters. I also wish to specially acknowledge Prince. Nicholas Ukachukwu who didn’t go to court despite coming third at the electoral polls; this a noble act which I consider worthy of respect and admiration. To my supporters, I thank you all for believing in my capacity to represent you at the Senate Chambers. My priority will always be to work for the betterment of public interest through robust, effective and detailed legislation and oversight to ensure that my people derive the dividends of democracy.
With your support, we convincingly won the election with 87,081 votes to beat;
Chris Uba of PDP who got 52,462 votes
Nicholas Ukachukwu of APGA – 51,269
Andy Uba of APC who got 13,245 votes.
This is a victory for my teeming supporters, including leaders, stakeholders, men, women and our dear youths whose mandate has been authenticated by the Elections Petition Tribunal judges.
I also wish to express gratitude to my legal team including Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), D.C DeNwigwe (SAN), J.O Asoluka (SAN designate) Onyinye Anumonye Esq and Chukwuemeka Nwigwe Esq as well as Counsel to INEC Mr JTU Nnodum SAN, Wale Agunbiade SAN, Chris Ubogu Esq, O.G Adindu Esq and their colleagues in chamber. Your outstanding contributions and efforts in this struggle for the cause of justice have not gone unnoticed. I thank you all immensely!
Conclusively, now is the time for the people Anambra South from all political parties and all subgroups to rise up and collectively work for the betterment of our beloved Senatorial District. Once more, I hereby stretch my hand of fellowship to all my co-contestants. Let all of us-contestants, electorate, men and women-join hands in the task of rebuilding and developing Anambra South.’
