إفـرادُ يـومِ السبت بــالــصــيــامِ
يــجــوز عــنـد الــســادة الأعلامِ
Fasting on Saturday only
Is permissible in the view of eminent scholars
والـــنـــهــي عـــنــه كـلُّـه معلولُ
كـــمـــا حــكــاه الـجِـلَّـةُ الفحولُ
The (ahādīth) prohibiting such fast are all defective
As established by renowned and distinguished savants
فــمـــالـــكٌ يـــقــول هــذا كـذبُ
وابن ســعــيــد يــتّــقي لا يكتبُ
Imām Mālik declared the Hadīth as fabricated
Ibn Sa’īd did not even record it (in his book)
وردَّه الــــزهــــــريُّ والأوزاعـــيْ
كــذاك أحـــمـــدٌ طــويـلُ الــبـاعِ
Az-Zuhri (Ibn Shihāb) and al-Awzā’ī both rejected the narration
So did (Imām) Ahmad (bn Hanbal)
كـــذا الــنــســائيُّ مــع الطحاوي
كــذا تــقــي الدين فـــي الفتاوي
Also, An-Nasā’ī, at-Tahāwī and Ibn Taimiyah in his (Majmū’) Fatāwah all rejected the Hadīth
ومـثـلـه تـلـمـيـذه وابــن حـجــر
أنـعـم بـهـم من سادةٍ ومــن غرر
His (Ibn Taimiyah’s) student (Ibn al-Qayyim) as well as Ibn Hajar (al-Asqalānī) all rejected the Hadīth.
وغــيــرهــم يــا صـاحـبــي كثيرُ
لــهــم عــلــى تـصـحـيـحـه نكيرُ
There are several other scholars who also refused authenticating the narration (of Āl Busr)
ومن يَـــرُمْ لــمــثــلـه تـصـحيحا
فــقــد أتى تــســاهـلا صــريـحـا
Whoso authenticates the Hadīth has indeed committed an act of clear negligence
لا ســـيـــمــا ومــتــنــه مـخـالفُ
لــمــا روتْـــهُ مُــســنــدا طـوائفُ
Especially when its text contradicts what has been narrated from the prophet by many reliable narrators
كــصــوم داود وصـوم جــمــعـةِ
بــصــوم يــوم قبلُ أو من غدوةِ
Such as the fast of prophet Dāwūd (one day on, one day off) and prohibition of fasting on Friday except with a fast prior or after (i.e. Thursday or Saturday)
فـــإنـــه يـــفـــرد بـــالـــصـــيـام
أو مـــع مـــا قـــبـــلُ مـن الأيام!
Saturday can be fasted alone or together with the preceding day (Friday)
فـــهـــو بـــحــقٍّ بـيِّـنُ الـشــذوذِ
والـــقــول بـالـتـحـريم كالمنبوذِ
This is clear enough with no ambiguity
Prohibiting fasting on Saturday only is utterly rejected (lit. like an outcast)
وقـــال قوم فـــيــه بــالــكـراههْ
وقــيــل لا؛ بــل حـكـمـه الإباحهْ
Some of the scholars say it’s (not prohibited but) reprehensible.
Some say, it’s permitted
فيـكــرهُ الـنــعــمــانُ ثـم أحـمـدُ
والـشــافــعـيْ أنْ بالصيـام يفردُ
Abū Hanīfah and Ahmad (in another view attributes to him) as well as Imām Shāfi’ī all detested that one should fast on Saturday alone.
ومــالــك يــقــول صُـمْـهُ مفـردا
ومـــن نـــهــى فلا تُـطــعْ مؤبدا
Imām Mālik is of the view that one should ignore the view of ithose who declares it forbidden or reprehensible and should observe the fast.
فـمــفـردا صُـمْـه وصمْ مضموما
وخَـلِّ مــن عـــسـاه أن يـلــومـا
Thus, you can either fast on Saturday alone or add another day to it (Friday or Sunday)
Ignore the criticism of those who hold a contrary view
فإن يـــوافـــقْ فــاضــلَ الأيــامِ
أو عــادةً لـلــمــرء فـــي الصيام
Should any of the best of days or a voluntary fast that one engages in fall on Saturday
كـــيـــوم عاشورا ويــــوم عرفه
أو إن يصم مــن شهره منتصفَه
Such include Āshūrā, ‘Arafah or 13,14, & 15 of the lunar month
فــلــيـــس فـــيــه مطلقا كراههْ
عــنــد ذوي التحقـيـق والفَقاههْ
There’s nothing wrong in singling out Saturday for fast (in such events)in the view of eminent and qualified jurists
لاسيما في التسع من ذي الحجةِ
فــضــلا إذا ما كان يــوم الوقفةِ
Most especially if the 9th of Dhul Hijjah falls on Saturday
يا رب يـــسِّـــرْ للــورى الصيامـا
واغـــفـــر بـــه للــصــائم الآثاما
O Lord! Make fasting easy for all
And forgive the sins of the fasting person
يا خير من أعطى وخـيـر سامعِ
اغــفــر لـنـا يا رب يـوم التاسع!
O Lord! Thou art the best of givers and the best listener
Forgive us on the day of ‘Arafah!
