Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that French Ligue 1 club Lille were better and deserved to beat Real Madrid in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League.
A Jonathan David first half stoppage time penalty earned Lille the shock win against Champions League Holders Real Madrid.
Madrid’s 14 game unbeaten streak in the UEFA Champions League came to an end in the defeat to Lille.
The La Liga giants have now lost each of their last three away games against French sides in Europe’s elite club competition without scoring.
3-0 vs. PSG (2019), 1-0 vs. PSG (2022) and 1-0 vs. Lille (2024).
Reflecting on his team’s defeat Ancelotti said his team did not live up to expectations.
“Lille were better and deserved to win. We were bad and slow tonight.
“We didn’t create, the possession was slow, no ideas. We were bad under every aspect.”
In another shocking result Aston Villa pipped Bayern Munich 1-0 at the Villa Park.
This is the second meeting ever between and Villa with the Premier League club emerging victors in both encounters.
Prior to Wednesday’s tie, their only meeting was the final of the 1982 European Cup (now Champions League) with Villa winning 1-0.
