The National Security Adviser, Mal. Nuhu Ribadu, has confirmed the escape of Nadeem Anjarwalla, a suspect in the ongoing criminal probe into the activities of Binance in Nigeria.
Ribadu explicitly stated that Anjarwalla fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport, and efforts are underway, in collaboration with Interpol, to issue an international arrest warrant for the suspect.
Anjarwalla, one of the two Binance executives detained in Nigeria for alleged tax evasion and other offences, reportedly escaped from lawful custody on Friday, 22 March, from an Abuja guest house where he and his colleague were detained.
In a statement signed by the Head of Strategic Communications, Office of the National Security Adviser, Zakari Mijinyawa, the NSA confirmed the suspect’s escape and announced the arrest of the personnel responsible for his custody. The statement emphasized ongoing investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape.
The Federal Government has been investigating money laundering and terrorism financing transactions on the Binance currency exchange platform. Anjarwalla, who holds British and Kenyan nationalities and serves as Binance’s Africa regional manager, was being tried by Nigerian courts until his escape.
Ribadu revealed that the suspect escaped while under a 14-day remand order by a Nigerian court and was scheduled to appear before the court again on 4 April 2024.
He urged the Nigerian public and the international community to provide any information that could assist law enforcement agencies in apprehending the suspect.
