The Netherlands put an end to South Africa‘s historic run in the Women’s World Cup knockout stages with a 2-0 victory in Sydney.

Netherlands Knocks Out South Africa 2-0 To Reach Women's World Cup Quarterfinals

During the match on Sunday, August 6, Banyana Banyana faced an early setback when a failed clearance in the ninth minute allowed Jill Roord to score an easy header into the open net, securing her fourth goal of the tournament as the Dutch midfielder.

Undeterred, the South Africans fought back valiantly and created several scoring opportunities. Captain Thembi Kgatlana was particularly menacing, unleashing multiple shots on target, only to be thwarted by the impressive saves of Dutch goalkeeper, Daphne van Domselaar.

At the start of the second half, Dutch winger Lieke Martens appeared to score a goal, but it was disallowed due to an offside call.

However, South Africa’s fate was sealed in the 68th minute when a seemingly routine shot by Lineth Beerensteyn slipped through Kaylin Swart’s hands and found the back of the net, prompting frustration from the goalkeeper.

With this victory, the 2019 finalists have advanced to the quarterfinals and are set to face Spain in Wellington on Friday.

Although South Africa’s journey in the tournament has come to an end, the 2023 Women’s World Cup has been historic for the team.

They secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Italy with a dramatic winner from Kgatlana during stoppage time last Wednesday, marking their first-ever win at this prestigious event.

Additionally, Banyana Banyana nearly secured a draw against Sweden, another formidable opponent, in their opening match of the tournament, showcasing their strength and determination on the world stage.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face the Three Lionesses of England tomorrow Monday in the second round of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
