Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state, has given assent to the bill passed by the Kano house of assembly which breaks up the emirate in the state.

The Kano State House of Assembly has removed 36 local government areas from the Kano Emirate to create four new emirates. Kano State has the highest number of LGAs in Nigeria, with 44.

With the development, Kano now has five emirates: Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi, while the domain of HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the emir of Kano, has been diminished.

Observers said the real motive of the governor is to reduce the influence of the Emir of Kano, Mr Sanusi, for reportedly opposing the re-election of Mr Ganduje. .

The governor scraped through reelection after a disputed supplementary election. He had lost heavily in Kano Municipal, the seat of the Emir.

Kano is one of only two states in Nigeria with one emirate or traditional council. Sokoto, the seat of the Sultan of Sokoto, is the other state with a similar arrangement.
