Last year, we fell in love with the voice of a self-professed siren, 234jaydaa, whose compelling vocals powerfully opened rare.’s magnanimous album closer, “hectic”.
With only one single to her name at the time, 234jayda has been steadily building up her discography, releasing two singles on Halloween, and now commemorating Valentine’s Day with The Crescent Moon Collection.
The Crescent Moon Collection is a ten-minute showcase for the supremely talented singer. The opening track, “Tuscan Sun” arrests us from the onset, as 234jayda mixes her piercing vocals with a voice synthesiser to create an all-encompassing siren wail.
The up-and-comer also soars on the emotional final track, “Absinthe” and the DAP-assisted second track, “Bordeaux”. DAP The Contract takes the lead on “Bordeaux”, delivering an incredible verse, before 234jaydaa signs the track off with her serene voice.
234jaydaa strictly names her songs after colours, explaining to us:
“I write a lot of my music based on colours, auras, because I’m very spiritual to everything is connected that way for me…
[So] the colour scheme is basically just auras and my colour association — I associate it with words, with emotions, people, it’s just a general thing.”
So, the project’s third track, “Nila’s Interlude” stands out not only because it defies her naming customs, but also in its mood. Produced by Bolu Sonola, aka Beaauxx, “Nila’s Interlude” sees Lady Donli and 234jaydaa reassuring their angel that she is more than what meets the eye.
The project’s closing track, “Absinthe” shows off 234jaydaa’s powerful range, as she shares tortured lyrics to a former lover. Appreciating that her final product isn’t without its faults, 234jaydaa tells Konbini:
“There’s a lot of imperfection in this EP that I feel needed to be there… I’ve tweeted it already, since Twitter is where everybody makes their statement: everything on this EP is deliberate and intentional.”
In 234jaydaa’s performances and her singing, her love for sensuality rolls out, so it is no surprise that she chose the day of love to drop her post-breakup series, encouraging us to feel her pain too.
Calling it The Crescent Moon Collection, 234jaydaa tips her hat to those who feel incomplete on Valentine’s Day, as well as paying respect to the religious symbols — the crescent and the star — that reminds her of home:
Bond with 234jaydaa this Valentine’s Day as you listen to the crescent moon collection:
