Agu Backs Setubal To End Winless Streak

Nigerian midfielder Mikel Agu has expressed confidence in the ability of his Portuguese Primeira Liga team Vitoria Setubal to keep improving after back to back draws in their last two games reports Completesports.com.

The Green and Whites are winless in their last 11 games dating back to last December with seven losses and four draws in all competitions but Agu reckons the fact that they were able to get points off their last two opponents is an indication that they may have turned the corner.

“We have not played too badly even in the games we lost. The match statistics will confirm that. We cannot just seem to put the ball in the net to win games,” he explained in an interview with Completesports.com.

“However, the results at home against Sporting CP (1-1) and Nacional (0-0) means we may have started getting things right.

“So all we need to do is keep doing what we’ve done in those two matches and also pray for luck too.”

The poor run of form has seen the modest club side fall from their early season sixth spot to 13th in the league table but Agu insists the team will finish strongly.

“We have a good team here as our results have shown before this slump and I’m sure we can get back that early season form and finish strongly in a better position,” he said.

Despite the poor form of the team, Agu has seen a huge leap in his own game and he’s consistently been one of the top performers for Setubal with two Team of the Week nominations for him this season.

His form has also led to his recall to the Super Eagles as well as sparked interests from a number of European clubs who wants the player who’s on-loan from parent club FC Porto.

He said: “I’m flattered by the interests shown in me but I want to help Setubal finish as high as we can before thinking about my next destination at the end of the season. For now, there’s work to be done and we are determined to do it.”

Setubal are home to Belenenses in their next game on Monday night. The visitors have lost their last two games although they sit in the seventh position.
