Olatoye ‘Sugar’ Temitope shot deadTragedy struck in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Saturday afternoon during the conduct of the governorship and House of Assembly election, when a serving member of House of Representatives, Mr. Temitope Olatoye, representing Lagelu/Akinyele Federal Constituency, was shot dead.

Olatoye, fondly called ‘Sugar’, who was a member of Oyo State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2015, was reportedly shot in the head. The bullet was said to have hit one of his eyes and left him badly injured.

He was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State until he left the party in the last quarter of 2018 when he lost the Oyo Central senatorial ticket to a former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, who is now a senator-elect. He defected to Action Democratic Party (ADP), where he picked the ticket, contested the February 23 election and lost.

The federal lawmaker was said to have run into an ambush laid for him by his attackers when he was returning from his village, Onigbodogi in Lagelu Local Government Area, where he had gone to vote.

Sunday Sun gathered that there was an epic battle between Olatoye and his attackers, as many people from both sides were reportedly killed.

After the incident, he was reportedly rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, where he was admitted in the Accident and Emergency Unit.

The Head, Public Relations Unit of UCH, Mr. Toye Akinrinlola, however, confirmed the death of Olatoye to journalists, saying that medical practitioners battled to save his life.

One of his Olatoye’s aides, who preferred anonymity, said: “Sugar was badly injured, though he was also courageous to defend himself very well. He was shot in the eye and had been taken to the accident and emergency unit of UCH.”
