Last year, with the release of his fantastic debut album, Language, we saw Uzo Emenike (aka MNEK) officially transform from a Grammy-nominated songwriter to a bonafide pop star.
Unapologetically and fiercely queer, the album housed lots of indelible hits, such as the Hailee Steinfeld-assisted “Colour” and the supremely cheeky “Girlfriend“, which he just dropped an equally cheeky music video for.
The pop music scene is a very strange place to see a black man thriving — especially an openly queer black man — however, MNEK proves he belongs time and time again, and even pushes the envelope further, like he’s done with this music video.
“Girlfriend” is an r&b/pop hybrid, where MNEK complains about his relationship with a closeted man, who is in a long-term relationship with a woman. Against an energetic beat, the singer calls out his love interest with his signature brand of sharp and quirky lyrics.
The perfectly fitting video starts off with MNEK in bed listening to his lover lie to his girlfriend. Between scenes of MNEK cuddling his lover, we see the girlfriend becoming increasingly more upset as she fecklessly bakes her unfaithful boyfriend a cake.
