
Holders Real Madrid were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam on Tuesday night following a shocking 4-1 home loss at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Ajax who lost the first leg 2-1 at home edged the tie 5-3 on aggregate to seal a place in the quarter-final.
Hakim Ziyech opened scoring for the visitors in the seventh minute, while David Xeres doubled the advantage in the 18th minute.
Real Madrid manager Santiago Solari then introduced the duo of Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale for Vicinus Junior and Gareth Bale.
The changes had little effect with Dusan Tadic adding the third goal for the away team two minutes after the hour mark.
Substitute Asensio reduced the deficit 20 minutes from time but Lasse Schone
got Ajax ‘ s fourth goal two minutes later.
At the Signal-Iduna-Park, Tottenham Hotspur advanced into the next round after beating their hosts Borussia Dortmund 1-0.
Maurizio Pocchettino’s men having defeated the Germans 3-0 in the first leg qualified 4-0 on aggregate.
Harry Kane netted the decisive goal three minutes after the break.
Two matches will be played on Wednesday with Manchester United hoping to overturn a 2-0 first leg home deficit against Paris Saint-Germain.
Portuguese champions FC Porto will entertain Italian side AS Roma. The visitors won the first leg 2-1.
