Last year, Chinko Ekun became a household name, thanks to the immense success of “Able God”. Now, the rising rapper is back to prove he isn’t a one-hit-wonder, enlisting Mavin Record’s Johnny Drille for “Calling” — the most unexpected collaboration of the year.
With this unlikely pairing, Chinko Ekun gets to show off his range as a rapper — a chance his “Able God” follow-up, “Samena”, didn’t exactly afford him. He does most of the heavy lifting, handling the song’s verses, with Johnny Drille delivering an expectedly strong chorus.
Against a Big Dre-produced beat, Chinko Ekun spends most of his time convincing his lover that his feelings are real, while Johnny Drille joins in to say he’s been calling to no avail. Their synergy on the track makes this out-of-left-field collaboration a shockingly effective one.
For the thoughtful music video, which was directed by WalinteenPro, we follow Chinko Ekun as he struggles to reach out to his partner, who shuts him out after a cancer diagnosis. The clip, which seeks to raise awareness, ends with a reminder that cancer can be fought and beaten.
