There is the widely known saying that women have to work twice as hard to get half as much as men, thanks to the patriarchal construct upon which most societies are built on — the Nigerian music industry, like most other professional industries, is no exception.
In our frustratingly male-dominated soundscape, it can often seem like there just aren’t any women making music. But the reality is, we aren’t lacking in female talent at all. Rather, our androcentric music industry is just too focused on the mediocrity of men.
But, thanks to platforms such as Femme — which looks to uplift women in the music industry and propel them into the mainstream — this is beginning to change. In the past year, we have seen more female artists being recognised and appreciated for their unquestionable talent.
Although we still have a LONG way to go, having difficulty narrowing down this list to just ten songs gives us hope that things are moving in the right direction. So, from Lady Donli’s anthemic “Cash” to Asa’s moving “The Beginning”, here are our favourite songs by Nigerian women this year (so far).
