Saheed Abioye, 27, was on Friday arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
The phone, valued at N40,000, is said to be owned by one Oyelade Monsurat.
The prosecutor, Olayiwola Rasaq, explained that the accused person committed the offence on July 11 at Akede area of Oke-Bale in Osogbo around 1:45am.
He said the offence was contrary to Section 390 (9) criminal code cap 34 vol. II laws of Osun State 2002.
The accused, who pleaded guilty to the offence, told the court that he was an orphan and that he resorted to stealing to fend for himself.
The magistrate, O. T. Badmus, rejected the prayer of the prosecutor to give a date to present facts on the matter, saying there were other complaints against the accused person.
He said since the accused person had submitted himself for trial by pleading guilty, the case should not be delayed further.
The prosecutor, however, brought to the notice of the court that Abioye had a pending case at another court bordering on stealing.
Badmus eventually sentenced the accused person to 10 months in prison without an option of fine and ordered that the phone he stole should be returned to the owner immediately.
