Family sitcoms were all the rage in the noughties, with shows like The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, Sister Sister and many more. Well, it seems they are trying to make a comeback, and the latest effort is Netflix’s Family Reunion, starring Nigerian-American actor, Anthony Alabi.
Family Reunion follows the McKellans, a family that decides to leave their glamorous city life and move back to their hometown. Alongside Alabai, who plays the father, Moz, the show also stars some TV veterans, including Loretta Devine (Grey’s Anatomy) and Tia Mowry (Sister Sister).
Born to a Nigerian father and Puerto Rican mother, Alabi was drawn to acting at a young age, but he was forced to choose between that and football. Well, it seems Alabi is defying the age-old adage by eating his cake and having it too, as he retired from the NFL pitch and is now on the small screen.
After leaving the NFL, Alabi started his acting career, appearing in shows like Bosch, Modern Family, Insecure and Raven’s Home. His role in Family Reunion is his first leading role, and after watching a few episodes, he’s definitely one of our favourite characters.
Speaking about the show to Meaww, Alabi said:
“I think what viewers will get first and foremost is a sense of nostalgia. I think you’ll get a throwback to shows like Family Matters and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
I think we really wanted to make sure that viewers felt that family dynamic, that sitcom feel, and after that, you’re going to laugh a lot.”
Well, we’re certainly laughing a lot, so he’s clearly doing a great job. Hopefully, this gig helps the clearly talented actor land even bigger roles, seeing as we can never have too many Nigerian-American stars in the spotlight.
