This year, Mavin Records has been on a roll. Acts such as Ladipoe and Johnny Drille are steady soaring; new signees, Rema and Crayon are rapidly making names for themselves; and Mavin vets, such as D’Prince and now Di’Ja are being brought out of the woodwork.
Although Di’Ja didn’t take a career break like D’Prince, her releases have been few and far between, thereby leading them to fly under the radar. In a bid to change all that, Di’Ja is coming out with another body of work, a self-titled EP, for which she has released the first four tracks.
Of the four tracks Di’Ja introduces her self-titled tape with, “Wuta” definitely stands out, not just in terms of the merits of the song, but also in terms of the subject matter — whilst the other tracks are about love, Di’Ja uses “Wuta” to advise her haters to mind their own business.
“Omotena”, the track that follows “Wuta”, finds Di’Ja singing about a lover she cannot lose — her sweet vocals accompanied by a male voice. Then on “Baby”, Di’Ja takes us through the honeymoon phase, before contrasting the spritely track with the mellow E Kelly-produced number, “Te Amo”.
Di’Ja has definitely piqued our interests with this commendable first half of the project — teasing a dynamic body of work that sees the talented singer tap into varying sounds — and we can’t wait to hear more from the only woman currently signed to Mavin Records.
